What is LEDUV Power and Energy

News 2026-01-22

Recently, the editor has seen many LED UV curing machines online, with prominent labels such as “200W power” on the information to attract customers’ attention. In fact, most of this power refers to electrical power, not the industry-standard LED UV curing machine power. So what exactly does LED UV power mean? What is the relationship between power and energy, and how to calculate it?

Here are some tips for choosing the right LED UV curing machine:
What is LED UV Source Power?
In fact, the LED UV curing machine power refers to the radiant power of the light source, which is the total radiant energy emitted per unit area per unit time on the surface of the light source. It is also known as the radiant exitance, which is the power emitted, transferred, or received in the form of radiation.

What is LED UV Source Energy?
LED UV curing machine energy refers to the accumulation of radiant power over time. For an LED UV curing machine: LED UV Energy (mJ/cm²) = LED UV Intensity (mW/cm²) * Exposure Time (S). Therefore, by precisely controlling the LED UV intensity and exposure time, you can accurately control the LED UV energy. Accurate control of the exposure time depends on the control system of a well-functioning LED UV curing machine.

What to Note When Choosing an LEDUV Curing Machine?
For deep LEDUV curing, the main condition is that the molecules in the UV coating must absorb photons with sufficient energy to become excited molecules, decompose into free radicals or ions, and cause chemical reactions such as polymerization, grafting, and cross-linking of unsaturated organic compounds to achieve curing. Among them, attention should be paid to the reasonable configuration between the decomposition energy of the photoinitiator in the supplied UV coating and the actual energy supplied by the LEDUV curing equipment.

If the required UV energy is known, insufficient LED UV energy will result in incomplete curing. If the LED UV energy required by the photoinitiator is unknown and excessive energy is supplied blindly, this practice not only wastes energy but also causes negative effects of over-curing, such as implosion and back-curing reactions. Therefore, scientific and reasonable energy configuration is important. In general, to ensure the curing effect, the energy supplied by the LED UV should be scientifically and reasonably greater than the required energy.
